Sisters in the Brotherhood
Updated On: May 14, 2009

In October 1935, Margaret Ellings became the first woman initiated into the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.  Today, our ranks include nearly 20,000 female members who can be found working on construction sites, power plants, and factory floors.

After the inaugural UBC International Women's Conference in 2002, "Sisters in the Brotherhood" grassroots groups were launched or expanded throughout the union.  They took on the mission to build a stronger UBC union by promoting activism and diversity and increasing the number of women members.

Our commitment to increasing the ranks of Sisters in the Brotherhood have never been stronger, and there has never been a better time for women to consider joining the UBC.
